Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was tragically killed in a targeted shooting outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel. The incident occurred late Monday evening, December 3, outside the upscale hotel where Thompson was staying.
According to the NYPD, the 52-year-old executive was shot multiple times by an assailant who fled the scene on foot. Emergency responders arrived promptly, but Thompson was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after. Investigators have labeled the attack as targeted, though the motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
Witnesses reported hearing several gunshots and described the scene as chaotic. Surveillance footage from the area is being reviewed, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Thompson, a prominent figure in the healthcare industry, had been CEO of UnitedHealthcare since 2021, overseeing the company’s vast healthcare insurance operations. His leadership was marked by initiatives to expand access to healthcare and improve patient care.
The suspect remains at large, and authorities are actively pursuing leads. In a statement, UnitedHealthcare expressed shock and grief over the loss, calling Thompson an "inspirational leader" and extending condolences to his family.
The investigation is ongoing, with the NYPD working to determine the motive and identity of the perpetrator.
